Not looking the part of a general, Menou was short, overweight, and losing some of his hair. Serving in the army before the Revolution, he attended the Estates-General as a representative of the nobility but supported the Revolution.
More of an an administrator than a fighting general, General Menou is remembered mostly for his service in Egypt. During the assault on Alexandria, he was wounded six times and then thrown from the top of the ramparts. While Governor of Rosetta, Menou converted to Islam, took the name Abdallah, and married a local woman. After General Kléber's unfortunate assassination, Menou assumed command of the French forces in Egypt and ultimately surrendered to the British the next year. With his return to France, he served in administrative posts, most notably as the Governor of Tuscany.
