Joubert, who had had shown considerable talent in Italy under General Bonaparte and was quite popular with both the people and the army, was the Director Sieyès's first choice for a general to help lead a coup d'etat against the Directory and bring the support of the army to the coup. Unfortunately, Joubert was killed at the beginning of the Battle of Novi, but shortly thereafter General Bonaparte returned from Egypt and led the successful coup d'etat.
Joubert's widow later became Macdonald's second wife.
