Edouard Colbert-Chabanais was the oldest brother of the three well known cavalry generals, his younger brothers Louis-Pierre-Alphonse and Auguste-Francois-Marie well-regarded in their own right.

During his Revolutionary career, Colbert-Chabanais was suspended from command by General Hoche on suspicions of being a royalist, but nothing severe ever came of this.

General Colbert-Chabanais' arm was wounded at Quatre Bas, but he continued to lead his unit and fought at Waterloo with his arm in a sling.
